White Collar Fic: Waking Up

Prompt:  #11 - Family

Word Count:  300

Part One:  Screams
Part Two:  Silent Tears

Peter was not quite conscious, but floating just below the surface.   He knew he was alive; the burn in his side from the bullet was throbbing, and the sutures were pulling at the already sensitive skin.   He could hear the whirring, hissing, and beeping of the hospital equipment around him.   He could feel El’s presence too, she held his hand squeezing it randomly, Peter wanted to respond, but he was just too tired, maybe if he rested a little longer he would be able to open his eyes.

He began to fight his way back again, wanting desperately to wake up.  The machines were quieter now and he could hear Elizabeth.   She was stroking his cheek, and running her fingers through his hair, she was sobbing softly, pleading with him to wake up.   She was not the only person in the room, someone else was with her.   Peter realized it was Neal, “He’s going to be alright; you know what a fighter he is”.   The concern in Neal’s voice was disheartening; it was Peter’s job to make everything right.   El and Neal should not have to sit there and watch him struggle.

Time passed, Peter finally opened his eyes to find El sleeping at his right side, her head resting lightly on the hospital bed, and her hand still holding his.   He looked to his left to see Neal sleeping in a recliner next to the bed, snoring.  He smiled looking at his family.   Using his thumb he gently stroked Elizabeth’s hand causing her to wake up, she smiled at him, and reached over and kissed him.

Neal woke up and watched Peter and Elizabeth knowing that his family was going to be okay.

Neal and Peter had found family in each other.

Thank you, it was fun to write, taking the prompts to build a small story. Don't think I'm ready to kill anyone off yet, love them both too much.

If you wanted to take a swing at a larger story we'd love to see it.

To echo Ladygray - thank you for not killing Peter. Or Neal.

This was a lovely trilogy - hope to read more from you.
