My take on this prompt by [info]pipilj at [info]CollarCorner

A huge thank you to Sholio for the Beta

Only Peter and Neal could somehow manage to turn a charity event into a competition. Burke Premier Events was working with a local rehabilitation clinic to raise money. The clinic had a wheelchair basketball team so El asked Peter to put together a team of FBI agents to compete in the charity.

Peter recruited some of the agents to form a team. Blake, Jones, Michaels, Johnson, and a couple other agents quickly joined. Even though he wasn’t an agent, Neal asked if he could participate since the proceeds were going to charity.  Peter agreed and they had a team.

Peter wanted the team to make a good showing and keep the crowd entertained so he scheduled some time in the FBI gym. This way his team could practice using the wheelchairs. Neal was the only teammate to not show up for practice. When Peter asked, Neal just grinned and said, “Don’t worry Peter, I know what I’m doing.”  That made Peter more nervous.

As the charity game began the competition between the two men took over. When Jones tossed the ball in Peter’s direction, Neal breezed through intercepting the ball before it reached Peter. Neal continued to the basket and scored. Peter was a little surprised, but didn’t say anything. It happened again. Blake passed the ball to Peter and Neal came whizzing through, intercepting the pass and taking the ball in for a score. Looking up he grinned in Peter’s direction, did a quick ‘wheelie’ and sped away.  Peter just stared at him not know what to think.  The crowd cheered Neal’s little move. Elizabeth and Diana joined the crowd in cheering Neal on, enjoying the show Neal was putting on. Neal was definitely the star of the FBI team.

Peter tried to avoid Neal after that, but Neal stayed close. Neal continued to steal any passes meant for Peter. Peter tried to race away from Neal, but Neal was persistent and followed. Peter decided to turn the tables on Neal. He intercepted a pass meant for Neal and sped down the court, with Neal right behind him. He scored, and spun around quickly in the wheelchair racing off in the other direction.  He waved at Neal as he passed him. The crowd cheered, laughing at the antics of the two men.

Neal and Peter were constantly racing each other up and down the court. Jones laughed, “Peter is chasing Neal, as usual.” Even the other team was laughing at how competitive these two were. Whenever the ball was errantly passed to an unattended area of the court, both raced to get there first.  It was a back and forth battle to see who could get down the court quicker. They would even push the other one out of the way to get to the ball first.

With the final seconds ticking away the FBI team was only down by one point. Blake had the ball and threw it down the court. The ball sailed past everyone. Peter and Neal eyed each other and both took off for the ball, bumping into each other along the way.  Neither man slowed down as they approached their destination. A loud thud was heard throughout the gym as Peter and Neal collided. Bodies and wheelchairs crashed to the ground, and low moans were heard.  Neal was at the bottom of the pile, his wheelchair wrapped around his left leg. Peter was on top of both Neal and the wheelchair.

A quick trip to the emergency room confirmed the damage that was done.  Neal’s left ankle was badly sprained. The tracking anklet caught in the spokes of the wheelchair twisting the ankle. Neal was given pain pills, told to keep off his foot for a few days, and to keep the leg elevated to keep the swelling down. The nurse handed him a pair of crutches and he headed out the door.

Peter and Elizabeth were just coming out of the next room.  Peter’s knee was wrapped, he had pulled his MCL. Peter had been given him the same set of instructions, keep off his leg, and keep the leg elevated. Peter had a set of crutches too.

Elizabeth looked at both of them, smiled, rolled her eyes, and shook her head.  She could barely keep from laughing. It was ironic that two men managed to end up on crutches because of racing around using wheelchairs. She looked at the two of them again, “Let’s get you both home.”

“Sorry Hon,” was all a clearly embarrassed Peter mumbled.

“I’m sorry too,” Neal apologized. “But it was all Peter’s fault.”

Peter shot a glare in Neal’s direction and started to say something, but Elizabeth cut him off. “I’m going to go and get the car. You two take your time and I’ll meet you at the door.”

Elizabeth turned and walked away, still laughing at the two of them. Suddenly she stopped and laughed even harder because she could not believe what she just heard.

“I’ll race you to the door.”

“You’re on.”

Thank you for reading, comments and critiques welcome.

Hahaha! That was awesome. Only our two boys could end up on crutches due to antics in wheelchairs, and still go back for more competition. Loved it!

Thanks for the wonderful read!

Glad you enjoyed the story. It seems there is always some sort of competition between our boys, whether it’s who can solve the case first or who has a better skill set at something. But that’s why we love them :-)
